"Doing laundry"  has been one of those necessary jobs ever since clothing was invented.   Early women did their laundry in a group,  perhaps using the time to socialize as they performed the mundane work.   Then came the invention of home washers and dryers,  providing privacy for the work,  and,  at the same time,  creating boredom.   But still today across the world there are opportunities to do your wash in a social setting,  even if it is just visiting your local laundromat!
