Information & history on rear of plaques:
8994 Blue Churn Country Store, South Westerlo, NY. Country stores, located strategically along America's back raods, kept travelers of the 19th and early 20th centuries well stocked for picnics. Featuring "simple country pleasures", the Blue Churn Country Store dishes up jams, cheese, and penny candy along with good, old fashioned customer service. This building was erected in the 1830's adn has operated as a general store, under different names and owners, ever since.
03-422 Bullet Hill School, Southbury, CT Is one of New England's oldest schoolhouses, operating from 1789 to 1942. Today it is unique classroom where students experience a typical 19th century school day. They dress in costumes representing the 1700's and 1800's and are allowed to bring only the type of foods eaten for lunch during those years. Using "primers" of old and writing with ink and quill, they do daily lessons, and play games of yesteryear. Take your own tour of Bullet Hill when you visit southwestern Connecticut.
05-413 Flying Dutchman Quilt Barn The legend of the Flying Dutchman dates to 1641, when the ship, so named, sailed unexpectedly into a storm, crashing on the rocks at the Cape of Good Hope and sank. The captain of the ship was not ready to die and released a curse, saying, "I will round this Cape even if I have to keep sailing until doomsday." It is said that if you look into the eye of the storm brewing off the Cape and you see the captain and his ship, you will die a terrible death. The design appeared during the 1840 Presidential campaign. Why, we don't know, but this beautiful pattern, though named after this tragic event, does not conjure up fear, but beauty. Made of Flying Geese units, look closely, can you see that ship sailing round and round?
05-414 Maple Sugar House, Clairdon, OH Pure maple syrup, 100% natural and delightful, is made only in eastern North America. With only a six weeks window, Sugar or Black Maples are tapped anywhere from mid-February through April. Weather conditions must be right for the sap to flow, freezing at night and a thaw during the day. Though the equipment has changed over the years, the process is still the same as when the Native Americans taught European settlers how to make "Zinsibukwud." This unique product, enjoyed around the world, requires ten gallons of sap to make just one quart of syrup.
