Information & history on rear of plaque:
John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland in 1838, and later moved with his family to a Wisconsin farm in 1849. Muir's passion for nature blossomed while he was surrounded by America's pristine wilderness. He was so enchanted by the natural world that he founded the Sierra Club in 1892, and had a direct hand in establishing several national parks. Though he did a great deal of thinking while walking on trails, it was in the study of this 17-room Victorian home where he wrote many of his articles and books on preservation. Today, Muir's home is open to the public, where the John Muir National Historic Site allows visitors to explore the home and grounds of this legendary naturalist.
