Information & history on rear of plaque:
Samuel Chase, who later became a signer of the Declaration of Independence and organized Annapolis' sons of Liberty, began construction on this house in 1769 when he was a young, struggling lawyer. During its construction, Chase ran out of money and sold it to Edward Lloyd, a wealthy tobacco planter. Lloyd hired an architect to complete the house and decorate its interior in 1774. No other three-story house was built in town before the Revolutionary War. Lloyd's youngest daughter married Francis Scott Key here in 1802. It has remained one of the finest mansions in Annapolis and is a Registered National Historic Landmark.
