During the rule of King Saul,  the Phillistines waged war on the Israelites.   A Philistine hero named Goliath challenged the Israelite army,  "Choose a man and have him fight me."   While Saul and the Israelites were terrified,  young David,  the eighth son of Jesse,  stepped forward.   With staff,  five smooth stones and a sling he approached the giant.   Goliath chided and cursed David.   But David replied,  "I come against you in the name of the Lord almighty.   This day the Lord will hand you over to me."   Taking a stone from his bag,  he slung it and hit Goliath on the forehead.   The Philistine fell face down on the ground.   David triumphed over Goliath through his faith in the Lord.
