Information & history on rear of plaque:

Fort Niagra Light, Youngstown, NY. In 1726, the French built Fort Niagra from sturdy limestone. It's distinctive architecture earned it the nickname "French Castle." During the French and Indian War, England captured the fort in 1759. By 1781, the British had placed a beacon on top of the fort. Today, Fort Niagra Lighthouse serves as a museum.

Dunkirk Light, Point Gratiot, NY. Today, Dunkirk Light is known as one of the best lighthouse museums on the Great Lakes. Its beam glistens across Lake Erie, just as it once did for 19th century immigrant ships bound for the upper Great Lakes. The current tower and dwelling were built in 1829. At one time the tower was cylindrical, but was then converted to a rectanglar shape, complimenting the dwelling. High Victorian Gothic in style, this lighthouse's first floor now contains exhibits related to its history, while the second floor contains displays of various military services, including the Coast Guard.

Presque Isle Light, Presque Isle, MI. Its construction authorized by President Lincoln in 1860 and completed in 1871, Presque Isle Light rests on a peninsula jutting into Lake Huron, beaming its light from a 113-foot tower, one of the highest on the Great Lakes. It's now a centerpiece for a 100-acre public park.

Eagle Bluff, Cana Island, WI. Eagle Bluff lighthouse was one of the earliest navigational markers established on Green Bay to guide vessels travelling from Lake Michigan. Its light first shone in 1868. Among the first of America's lighthouses to become automated it has not housed a keeper since 1909. The keepers dwelling serves as a museum in Peninsula State Park. Eagle Bluff is located in Door County, which has nearly 250 miles of rugged shoreline boasting more lighthouses than any U.S. county.

Whitefish Point Light, Whitefish Point, MI. When bone chilling winds blast across Lake Superior, the beacon from Whitefish Point Light is one of the most welcoming sights to a sailor. Whitefish Point has a treacherous history that has made it known as the Graveyard of the Great Lakes. Murderous waves and gale-force winds have resulted in more than 100 shipwrecks in this area. Constructed in 1861, the lighthouse is a steel cylinder, approximately 80 feet tall and supported by a skeletal steel framework. This design was intended to take stress off the building during high winds. Today, the dwelling houses the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, recalling those ill-fated moments when the lakes claimed various ships.
