Old Main, with its twin towers,  is the most memorable and beloved building on the W&J campus.   Listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks,  Old Main has served virtually every student in the college's history since the construction of the central portion of the building in 1836.   Between 1847 and 1850 two wings were added to the original structure,  along with a dome that was later removed.   The twin towers were built in 1865 with a gift of $50,000 from the town of Washington to symbolize the union of Washington College and Jefferson College.
A fourth floor,  mansard roof and the present front were added in 1875.   In addition to classrooms,  faculty offices,  computer facilities,  the faculty lounge and the college chapel,  Old Main is also the home of the original bust of Thomas Jefferson that was done for the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.
