Information and history on reverse side of plaque:
South Side is a typical Pittsburgh neighborhood,  one of eighty separate ethnic pockets of culture around the city.   Originally known as Birmingham at the turn of the century,  the neighborhood was filled with factories which produced iron and glass in the floor plain of the Monongahela River,  or "the flats".   Seventy-six glass factories supplied half of the nation's output in the mid-1600s,  and the workers,  mostly Eastern Europeans,  built their "Victorian" row homes amongst the factories.   German and Irish immigrants built modest frame homes further up on the hillside or "slopes" of Mt. Washington,  called "Coal Hill".   South siders seldom crossed the river into Pittsburgh because everything they needed was available to them from Carson Street Merchants.   Like the rest of the city,  the South Side has changed while trying to preserve the past.   Blue-colar businesses and shot-and-a-beer bars are now upscale nightspots or art and antique shops,  as the South Side has found a new way to prosper.
This is also the site of the film - "Inspector Gadget."
