R169 Somers Cove Lighthouse Chesapeake Bay, MD

Information & History on back of piece: Built in 1867. This lighthouse marked the entrance to the Little Annemessex River and the famous seaport of Crisfield, Maryland. The wooden structure was dismantled in 1932. Today the framework still remains, and is known to watermen as the skeleton lighthouse or the five legger.
In 1847 a lighthouse was built to warn ships away from dangerous shoals extending several miles to the east of Cape Canaveral but the brick tower was only sixty-five feet tall and its light was so weak that mariners were already over the shoals before they could see it. In 1859, a second taller tower was begun at Cape Canevral, but work was halted by the start of the civil War. Captain Miles Burnham, the lighthouse keeper at the time, buried the lamps and clockwork in wooden cases in his orange grove near the Banana River. When the war ended in 1865, he dug up the equipment and returned it to the U.S. government. Workers resumed building the tower, finally completing it in 1868, installing a first-order lens that mariners could see 18 miles at sea and replacing the old whale oil fuel with kerosene. The lighthouse consisted of a cast-iron cylinder lined with brick, standing 189 feet above sea level with a 165 step circular stairway to the top. In 1873, authorities on the Lighthouse Board had the conical tower painted with black and white horizontal bands similar to North Carolina's Bodie Island Lighthouse. In 1894, with waves crashing within 200 feet of the tower foundation, the structure was dismantled and rebuilt more than a mile west of its original location. The coast Guard took over the Lighthouse in 1939, as it did lighthouses throughout the United States. In 1995 Canaveral Light was refurbished by the Coast Guard.
