Located between the Hudson and East Rivers, the Borough of Manhattan covers a rocky island 12.5 miles long and 2.5 miles at its widest. The entire island was purchased by the Dutch from the Manhattan Indians in the 1600s for the equivalent of about 24 dollars. That amount wouldn't buy one square inch of the land here today. When New Yorkers talk about going "downtown," they're talking about visiting the southern tip of Manhattan Island, the oldest part of New York. The city's historic roots have left traces in the names of this area's most famous locations, such as Wall Street - named for a wooden palisade that was built across the island in colonial times, and now a major center of world finance. The small Bowling Green park was actually a colonial bowling field, and Broadway was originally an Indian path which the Dutch widened and named for its new status. As Lower Manhattan became a major financial, immigration, and shipping center, space became more precious, and the buildings became taller. When the World Trade Center towers were built (1962-77), they were the tallest structures in the world. At 110 stories (1,348') they were the daytime home to over 50,000 workers, and an estimated 250,000 people passed through the structures every day. Designed by Japanese Architect Minoru Yomazaki, they towered over the Lower Manhattan Skyline, a comforting landmark to local natives, and a point of American national pride. Their destruction on September 11, 2001, by terrorists forever changed our view of Lower Manhattan.

Information on back side of plaque:
On the morning of September 11, 2001, America was hit by the worst terrorist attack in history. As thousands of innocent citizens began their business day, four planes left Boston, Washington, and Newark bound for California, and were hijacked. These aircraft were then used as weapons of mass destruction. The first two hit and destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City, one of the tallest buildings in the world, symbol of our nation's industry and pride, and the daily workplace of over 50,000 citizens. These strikes occurred at 8:45 and 9:03 am, EDT. At 9:43 the third plane plunged into the Pentagon, seat of our Nation's military power. At 10:45 it was confirmed that a fourth plane had gone down in Somerset County, Pennsylvania - miles short of its target, reportedly thanks to the bravery of passengers. Thousands of lives changed forever within the space of two hours as husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters were torn away forever. The attacks were clearly a deliberate effort to cripple the morale of America, shaking our faith in our safety and our belief in our strength. But we will not let this stand. Within hours, thousands of American citizens came forward to help each other in this time of dire need. As the government mobilized all its resources to track down the perpetrators, doctors, mechanics, and civilians from all walks of life rushed to help the rescue crews to treat injured victims, locate the lost, donate blood, and clear the wreckage. The tragedy which was meant to tear us apart has made us come together and stand strong. September 11, 2001, is a date that we will never leave behind us, even after the healing is done. On the reverse side of the flag: Stars and Stripes "White is for purity; red for valor; blue for justice. And together, bunting, stripes, stars, and colors make the flag of our country, to be cherished by all our hearts, to be upheld by all our hands." Charles Sumner We Remember - September 11, 2001
On the face side of the base piece: Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands: one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. September 11, 2001
As a side note from the Daniel @ WLC, most folks say the pledge with a misplaced breath - "one nation - breath - under God". While in fact the pledge should be said - one nation under God, - breath - indivisible. Check out where the commas are located. Why must I be the one person that is pledging to the flag while other folks are breathing.
