Information & history on rear of plaques:
COA01 Valley Church, Yosemite National Park, CA. built by a small group of pioneers, this non-denominational chapel is set in a remote valley of Yosemite National Park. Today, it is a popular setting for weddings. Amazing Grace verse 1
COA02U St Bridget Church, Cornwall Bridge, CT. This charming Conneticut church displays details of the Gothic Revival style, which began around 1840, and lasted until just after the Civil War. This style grew out of a reaction against Greek Revival, which was considered a more pagan form of architecture. Typical elements of a Gothic Revival church include pointed-arch doors and windows, a square tower with a belfry, and quatrefoil devices. Amazing Grace verse 2.
COA03 Christ Church in Frederica, St. Simons Island, GA. Christ Church was established in 1736 by John and Charles Wesley, who came to Georgia as missionaries of the Church of England. The first church on this site was built in 1820, but was nearly destroyed later in the Civil War. In 1884, the present church was built by Anson Green Phelps Dodge, Jr. as a memorial to his wife, Ellen. After completion of the church, Anson dodge took Holy Orders and became the rector of the church he had built, serving there until his death in 1898. Several pieces do not have verse 3 printed on back.
COA04 Nevada City Church, Nevada City, CA. The church was moved from its original site, which is now Pioneer Cemetary, to it's present location in 1852. It was lost twice to fire, once in 1858, then again in 1862. The present buildiing was dedicated in 1864 and remains in use today. Amazing Grace verse 4
COA05 G-d's Summer Palette, Stark, NH. A tranquil scene of a country church from the seventeenth century alongside a charming covered bridge. The ornamental belfry created a Gothic flourish to this rural church. It is believed that the two entry doors were established for use as separate entrances for men and women.
COA06 Old Church on the Hill, Lenox, MA. The English influence can be seen in the architecture of this American church, more formerly known as Community Church, built in 1805. Often the most ornamental parts of a church's exterior were patterned after English designs. It was common practice in the nineteenth-century to have a congregational cemetery in the churchyard. Some of the descendants of the parishioners interred on the grounds of the "Old Church on the Hill" still live in the area today.
COA07 Faith Chapel, Jekyll Island, GA. Was constructed and dedicated in 1904 as Episcopalian, but leaders of the church held out their hands to visitors of other beliefs. Installed in 1921, the stained glass window portraying the theme "David Set Singers Before the Lord" was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany in memory of former Jekyll Island Club president Frederick Gilbert Bourne. It was said the theme may have been an allusion to Bourne once being a former head of the Singer Sewing machine Company.
COA08 Old Whaling Church, Edgartown, MA. Called the Old Whaling Church because it was built with whaling money, this Methodist Church is an outstanding example of Greek Revival architecture. It's most distinctive features are its Gothic columns and its 92-foot tower. Today, the building is used as a performing arts center.
