Information & history on rear of piece:
NTK01 Brant Point Lighthouse, Nantucket, MA, The first lighthouse was built on Brant Point in 1746, making it the second oldest light station in the United States. Unfortunately because of several firs and storms, a total of ten lighthouses have stood in this spot. Although the present twenty-six foot lighthouse has survived since 1901, it is the lowest light in New England. Its fourth order Fresnel lens can be seen from as far away as ten miles.
NTK02 Swain Cottage, Nantucket, MA, once the greatest whaling center in the world, has become one of America's treasured retreats. It was not until the 1920's that Nantuckets quiet isolation became public knowledge. Motor vehicles were not allowed until 1918. Sconset, a small fishing village at the eastern end of Nantucket, derives its name from "Siasconset - place of many whale bones" Once a booming railroad town in 1899, Sconset eventually became a small village of retreat and isolation. Now, the village's only activities are the morning games at the Post Office, blueberry muffin breakfasts for cyclists from town, shopping for provisions at the market and an occasional game of tennis. Sconset's grey cottages, such as the Swain Cottage, are peacefully blanketed by roses throughout the month of July.
NTK03, Pedal Stop, shows a bicycle leaning against a white picket fence that has been decorated by blooming roses, but what is in the bike basket?
NTK04 Old North Wharf, Nantucket, MA. Built in 1774, the Old North Wharf is one of Nantucket's oldest sites. It is only one of five wharves that is residential. In the background the familiar gold-domed steeple of the Unitarian Church or South Tower can be seen. Built in 1809, this is Nantucket's oldest church. Since 1820, Nantucket's five wharves have been devoted to whaling and to various commercial operations such as lumber, coal, and ice storage.
NTK05 Sankaty Light, Nantucket, MA. Built in 1849 and lit in 1850, this lighthouse stands on a bluff 90 feet above sea level. The 70-ft tall tower was one of the first to receive a Fresnel lens and is now considered endangered due to erosion.
