Information & history on rear of lighthouse:
"New Canal Light" sits on the bank of Lake Pontchartrain, one of a series of inland lights that mark Louisiana's navigational lakes and bayous. The lighthouse took its name from an early 1930's canal building project. The "New Canal" was intended to link Lake Pontchartrain with the New Orleans business district and with the Mississippi River, but was never completed. "New Canal Light" was completed in 1838 and was demolished in 1854 due to deterioration. It was soon replaced by this existing structure. The building that once served as a keepers dwelling and light house now serves as headquarters for the Coast Guard's Lake Pontchartrain rescue service.

Information & history on rear of lighthouse:
Built in 1885, Middle Bay Lighthouse consists of a hexagonal-shaped cottage with a lantern perched on top. In the summer of 1916, the light-keepers wife gave birth. The keeper faced a challenging problem wiith his wife unable to nurse the hungry newborn. There was no refrigeration and supplies were inconsistent. His solution was simple, a milk cow was brought to the lighthouse and corralled on a section of the deck. Both cow and baby survived but were later evacuated before a hurricane hit the coast. Today the light has been decommissioned, but stands as a day marker to all ships in the area.
