Information & history on rear of lighthouse:
The original Key West Lighthouse was built in 1825. It was destroyed in 1846 by a hurricane that took the lives of the lightkeeper, his children, and many townspeople. Rebuilt in 1847, it was maintained for the next fourteen years by the lightkeeper's widow. The light stands about eighty-five feet tall.

In 1869 the East Chop Lighthouse replaced an earlier semaphore signal tower that first used flags of different colors and patterns, then later used telegraph to relay shipping information along the East Coast as early as 1802. Of the five lighthouses on Martha's Vineyard, East Chop is considered the most beautiful.
