History on rear of piece:
The Old Manse was built in 1770 for Reverend William Emerson,  a patriot and spiritual leader of the Concord Minutemen.   On April 19,  1775,  Emerson and his wife witnessed the outbreak of the American Revolution as they watched the battle of Concord from behind their home.   In this house,  Ralph Waldo Emerson,  Reverend Emerson's grandson,  wrote his first book,  entitled Nature.   In 1842,  Nathaniel Hawthorne honeymooned here with his new bride,  Sofia.   They rented The Old Manse for three years,  during which time Hawthorne immortalized the house by writing Mosses From An Old Manse,  published in 1846.
The Old Manse is a property of The Trustees of Reservations and is open to the public.
